Sonnets

Writing a sonnet is hard work, so while our students are still working hard to write theirs, here's one I wrote as an example:

This weather is so odd, I never know
If I should wear a coat, or a swim suit
With flip flops, or a fuzzy winter boot
To keep my toes warm in the ice and snow.

I look on weather dot com for I hope
To see that snow’s predicted by the yard
The answer from the screen I take quite hard
When students ask, “a snow day?” I say, “nope.”

The kids they ask if we can go home now
I answer just by looking out of doors
Where sunbeams stream from, filling up the floors
I’d acquiesce if I could think of how.

I’d love a snow day much as anyone,
But this year, I’m afraid, we will have none.

Student Etheree Poems

In this assignment, students were to write a double-Etheree, one straight-forward and one in reverse, showing the opposite nature of the poem's theme. Here's what some of them wrote.

Good
Protects
From evil
Saves people all
The time whenever
People are in danger.
People who protect people.
They are also known as heroes.
Heroes are not always fantasy.
But someone who fights crime and all evil.

Bad people will always rob and steal.
One thing that I should tell you is that
Evil people are really bad.
Villain is a name that works.
A name that matches them
Their main threat is that
They can hurt you
They rob you.
Evil
Bad

In
Summer
Flowers bloom
Pretty roses bloom
And blossoms blooming
Summer we go to camp
Which is summer camp it is
Very fun my favorite season is
Spring but summer is better than spring
Winter is not the best season ever

Winter is not fun like summer but spring
Is better than winter and summer
Winter is cold and freezing and
Pools are frozen like your feet
And your hands and your legs
And trees are dying
And I am cold
Winter is
The worst
Day

A. Strickler

Bad
Evil
Don’t be bad
Don’t be evil
Evil is not good
Evil is bad to me
Being mean is bad for you
Being evil is very bad
Don’t be evil to your brother too
Don’t be evil to your mom and dad.

That is all goodbye and be good
I will obey you can obey too
Be good to your friend and cousins
Saying good things to a friend
She is a nice person
Be nice to your sis
You can be nice
Righteous
Be good
Nice

K. Omwenga

Good
Is someone who
Is a hero to people
He fights; he is a
Super hero. He protects them.
He is a hero to the people
I like heroes because they’re cool
Me and my friends pretend we’re super heroes
We watch TV on Sunday about heroes and they’re fun
Hey, nobody doesn’t like heroes—everyone loves them.

Evil people are so evil—they kill people who are innocent.
A villain is bad, and mean; he hurts people.
Villains are bad and they destroy our cities
But villains and heroes are different
Villains and heroes fight to save or destroy
Villains aren’t nice—they’re bad
Villains are not heroes
Villains are evil
Not good
Evil

Example Poem

Students were writing Etheree poems today, but we couldn't find a good example. Here's one we wrote in class:

Fall.
Autumn.
Colored leaves
Float gently down,
Jostled by the breeze.
Up and down they go, they
Dance in mid-air like tiny
Ballerinas in brightly hued
Dresses; bright orange, yellow, red. Colors
Take a bow as they descend to the stage.

Bitter chill gives way to a fresh season,
Something old, something new—déjà vu.
Characters return to play their
Roles with passionate fervor.
New blossoms take the stage,
Embracing the warmth
To act their parts,
Robed in green.
Spring-time.
Life.

Journal Prompt

Today is Thankful Thursday. What are you thankful for today? Out of all the things you could be thankful for, why did you choose that one? What makes it special to you?

Bike-a-thon Poem

Since Ariana wasn't able to make it to the bike-a-thon (and thus wasn't able to write a news story about it, as was the assignment), she wrote an original poem about bikes.

Bikes are cool.
You should have one, and I should have one, too.
Brothers and sisters should have one, too.
Bikes are nice.
Bikes are cool.
You should have one, and I should have one, too.

Journal Prompt

What did Jesus mean when he said: "Do to others as you would like them to do to you?" How does this happen in your life?
